"The Gift" was the my 3rd bluebird painting. I finished it in November 2001...a month before my husband, Chuck, left for a 3 week business trip to China.
The painting is about trusting God with our life's journey...the triangles represent those serendipitous moments that God places along our yellow path...like gifts that say, "Pay attention...this is the way!"
Before Chuck left for China, I stuck yellow post it notes in his suitcase...in his shirts...his socks...his Bible...his books...his briefcase...anywhere he might look while he was away from home. They said things like..."watch for falling triangles!"..."don't trip over the triangles!"...triangles are everywhere!"
So, the first Sunday after he left for China I got in the car to go to church. At the end of our driveway, I stopped, opened my car door, picked up the big Sunday newspaper and threw it into the passenger seat, and pulled out into the street.
When I stopped at the stop sign I heard something... Blink. Blink. Blink. I checked to see if my turning signal was on, but it wasn't. Then I realized it was my emergency flashers that were blinking. Blink. Blink. Blink. How on earth did they get turned on? I reached down to the steering column to turn them off, but the button wasn't on my steering column. I looked all over my dashboard and couldn't find any way to turn them off. Blink. Blink. Blink.
I drove back home, parked and got the driver's manual out of the glove compartment. I read it from cover to cover and couldn't find anything about the emergency flashers on/off switch. Blink. Blink. Blink.
I looked out the car window and saw Chuck's truck sitting in the carport next to me. Why hadn't I thought of that before? I turned off my car...jumped in Chuck's truck, put it in reverse, and pulled out. Then I noticed it...Blink. Blink. Blink. Emergency flashers work with the car off, too!!
I pulled the truck back into the carport, got out and got back in my car. I decided to talk to God...he knows where that flasher button is...and I don't! My conversation went something like this. "Okay, God, I don't know what's going on here. I'm trying to go to church and I know that you want me to go to church, but I can't leave these lights blinking and run my battery down and I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find the button to turn them off! Now, I know that you know where the button is, so please let me find it and I'll be on my way. I would appreciate it so much because I'm kind of getting myself all worked up about this!" Blink. Blink. Blink.
I had the strangest feeling that God had heard my prayer...and that He was ...amused!! He knew where that button was...but He wasn't telling!! I said, "I DON'T THINK THIS IS VERY FUNNY! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU JUST CAN'T HELP ME FIND THIS BUTTON!!" Blink. Blink. Blink.
"Okay, I know I'm missing something here, but if you're not going to help me, then I'm just going to church anyway!" I drove the 5 miles to church. Maybe somebody would be in the parking lot to help me. Blink. Blink. Blink.
By now I was 45 minutes late for Sunday School, but thankfully another car pulled into the parking lot right before I did. I parked and turned off my engine. Blink. Blink. Blink. I got out just as a man I'd never seen was walking by.
"Excuse, me. I'm sorry to bother you, but my emergency flashers are on and I don't know how to turn them off. Could you help me?" I smiled. Feeling foolish. Blink. Blink. Blink. He kindly agreed to see what he could do.
After about 5 minutes, it was clear he didn't know any more about my car than I did! Blink. Blink. Blink. But just as he was about to give up he said, "Oh, here it is, right next to the radio!" He pushed the button and my car was quiet at last. Relieved, I thanked him and he walked on down the sidewalk to church. The newspaper must have hit the button and turned on the flashers when I threw it in the car.
I stood by the car thinking, "Lord, I have the oddest feeling that you're still amused, but I just don't get it. But I do appreciate the help in getting my flashers off." I went on to church, still clueless.
Late that night I received an email from Chuck. He had told me about some unexpected changes that had taken place with our partner in China. It didn't look like good news. I was tired and got in the bed and wrote in my journal. This is what I wrote..."Our plans will have to change. We have to see all the triangles that are right in front of us. Just like the emergency flashers that I couldn't figure out how to turn off. " And then it hit me!
I turned the burglar alarm off, went out into the cold December night at midnight in my pajamas and opened my car door and sat down. I looked at the now familiar button next to the radio. The symbol on the emergency flasher switch was a triangle!! A triangle!! Wouldn't you know it!
No wonder God was amused! There I had been constantly saying, "Look for the triangles! Don't trip over the triangles." And then when one was right in front of me and I desperately needed it, I couldn't even see it!!
I went back in the house and continued in my journal..."I just realized the flasher switch had a triangle on it! Well, I had to stop and email that to Chuck. Goosebumps here! Lord, I know you are in charge here...taking care of our future. Let us see the triangles clearly. Work out the details before we get there and show us the right direction. Make us better lookers and listeners."
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
