Our grandson Wesley came for a visit last summer. He love all the flowers in front of the fence. I heard him singing this song as he was happily watering the flowers. We sat together and wrote it down so we could always remember that special day.
My best friend and neighbor, Montrue brought these morning glory seeds with her from New York. She planted them on her side of our fence next to the driveway. My side of the fence faces south so they are always poking their heads through to catch the sun. Montrue and her husband Bill tease me about sneaking out at night and pulling all the blooms to my side of the fence! We are all partners in crime when it comes to flowers.
These were so pretty and healthy all summer. If anybody knows their real name, please let me know!
By late summer everything had gotten really big! The butterflies and bumble bees are always busy here!
Our front yard in small but cozy because of the fence and the two large dogwood trees on each side of the walk. The ever-present creeping jenny is growing in the cracks.
By August the gardens had really filled in. Just looking at this picture makes me long for summer!
The big fern to the right of the sidewalk comes back every year. The swing and the rocking chairs are my favorite place to be.
I love this little spot with Peter Rabbit standing vigil. Cinnamon ferns circle the tree with a small herb garden of rosemary, thyme near the walkway. Creeping jenny is planted in the cracks in the walk to save me the trouble of weeding.
The green flat plant growing from under the white impatiens is creeping jenny. Huntley shared some with me last year. It grows flat on the ground or drapes down planters and is a bright apple green. I give a piece of it to anybody who will stand still long enough for me to dig some up. One cutting and you're set for life!
Salvia, coleus, periwinkles, impatiens, shasta daisies, zinnias and one determined purple pansy!
Last summer I decided to add some perenniels to my front garden to make it less labor intensive in the spring. My friend Huntley gave me the pretty yellow daisy like flowers. They bloomed like crazy till frost and got much taller than the picture. The orange cosmos sticking its head over the fence was grown from seeds my friend, Dodie, in Tennessee gave me. On the little jar the seeds were in was written "Wilma's purple flowers". Ooops! They weren't purple but we enjoyed them just the same.
There is 18 inches of dirt between our fence and the sidewalk. This spot gets the morning sun and the flowers are very happy there.
This little pond is at the bottom of our back porch steps. My friend, Montrue and I found two black plastic pond liners at a garage sale for a grand total of $5. She and her husband Bill have beautiful gardens and had just put in a tiny pond and garden that was like a little jewel. Montrue suggested the spot for my pond and I'm so glad she did. Chuck did the hard part--digging the hole for the liner. My friend Charlotte gave me the old chair with no bottom that we lined with screen and dirt for a planter. Rocks line the edge but the flowers have tumbled over them into the water. A small pump adds the peaceful sound of water trickling over the rocks. It makes me smile every time I come down the back steps.
The previous owners did a wonderful job of landscaping the front yard. I've just added some flowers.
I put these zinnias in a circle around a little redbud tree we planted in the spring. They are in yellow, red, hot pink and white and have bloomed like crazy all summer.
We have four big flower bed islands in the backyard. This one is about half way back. The purple blooms in the lower left are Russian sage. It's neighbors are an everblooming hydrangea (that's never bloomed!!), a crape myrtle, a purple butterfly bush and a river birch. The whole bed overlooks the triangle sculpture with the labyrinth beyond that.
These are in my herb garden by the driveway. This little garden is sort of the entrance to the backyard with a little stone path running through it. The bees love this garden. Most of the time they mind their own business but sometimes they chase me when I cut the flowers and herbs!
The white fence in front of our house is fairly tall, but the gate lets people know they are welcome.
